Do Pigs Think?

This morning I am sitting in my desk chair.

I lean back and contemplate the blank brick

wall behind my computer screen.

In front of my computer screen I have

placed an empty antique saucer

as a symbol of what matters.

All that I have is nothing, not mine.

There is a theory that pigs have souls.

There is a theory that humans have souls.

In my autonomous mind I hear a conversation

between two pigs:

"What manner of being would kill and consume

one-hundred-thirty million pigs a year?

Not to mention, cattle, goats, birds, sheep,

and the poor innocents of the sea."

"They turn everything to poison.

Is that a creature with a soul?"
